Description

Crossed Borders is a project based on the interesting military history of the area expanding from the Kvarner Gulf and all the way to the northern mountain ranges. The area in question has represented an important passage for various nations and armies since prehistoric times. The so-called military historic region has been marked significantly by its strategic position.

Today, this area is intertwined with numerous fortification systems, from the prehistoric hill forts, the Roman ramparts and fortresses, the medieval castles and the anti-Turkish forts and the Vallo Alpino fortification system along the former Rapallo border. In former Yugoslavia, this area was renowned for its extensive training-grounds and its enormous military facilities.

Despite numerous transit guests and the proximity of larger tourist centres (Postojna Cave, Rijeka, Škocjan Caves ...), the area has not yet been successful in retaining a large number of guests. With a comprehensive appearance in the tourist market, an enriched tourist offer, and the development of the required tourist infrastructure, the area could develop into a well-known tourist destination. This would contribute greatly to the revival of the economy of the area and to adding variety to the offer of larger surrounding tourist centres.

Two museum collections were set up, one at the old Pivka Command and the other at the Prem Castle; four dioramas were produced for this purpose. The first one was more extensive and it represented the cross-section of the history of the military historical region, while the other was medieval-oriented and showed the development of the fort and the castle at Prem.

In the old barracks in Pivka, a permanent Slovenian military collection was built up together with an information centre, reception, and the projection room which is used as a conference room and a multivision presentation room. For the needs of the information centres within the project area (Pivka, Ilirska Bistrica, and Klana), they prepared a multivision and interactive presentation of the history cross-section of the military historical region showing characteristic fortifications and ramparts from prehistoric times up to the modern period, when the Alpine wall was constructed.

The project was co-funded by the EU, by the European Territorial Cooperation Programme Slovenia-Croatia.
